Swabbing the baby’s mouth
The father took advantage of an opportunity one day when his wife was napping. He slowly opened the DNA kit, his hands trembling. He gently swabbed the baby’s mouth, trying not to wake her. He sealed the sample and concealed his actions from everyone. Later, he mailed it to the lab, a heavy weight resting on his chest. ‘Please, make this nothing,’ he silently implored, watching the mailbox swallow his concerns.

Trying to distract himself, the father immersed himself in his work. He spent hours at his desk, thinking that the mundane activities would keep his thoughts busy. However, concerns of the DNA test kept him from concentrating. Meetings seemed unending, and his productivity plummeted. ‘Focus,’ he said to himself, but it was a losing battle. Every second apart from the infant exacerbated his nagging fears.
