Joe sensed his tolerance dwindling. He had to finish this once and for all. Petunia opened her lips to respond, but before she could, Jennifer’s voice boomed out from the hallway. “Joe! “Please come quickly!” Joe’s heart tightened at her urgent tone. He dashed to the doorway to see Jennifer standing there, her face pallid and tear-stained. “What’s wrong?” he said, his voice shaking with anxiety. “It’s your mother,” Jennifer muttered, barely audible. “She… she hit me.” Joe’s blood cooled as he pondered her remarks. Without thinking, he pushed past Jennifer and raced outside, surveying the yard until he noticed Petunia standing there, her fists clinched.
