Capote’s admiration for Lee was evident even before he declared, “I can’t think of any woman more feminine than Lee Radziwill—not even Audrey Hepburn.” Everyone knew it, including Lee. As he spent more time with her, he convinced her that she belonged onstage. It just so happened that there was an upcoming theatrical performance of The Philadelphia Story, and he thought she should play the lead. Capote was persuasive, and Lee ultimately decided to go for it. While Capote supported her, her husband thought that standing on stage was tasteless. Despite her reservations, she tried it and quickly regretted her decision.
