Despite her husband’s resistance, Lee was eager to appear on stage; the opening night was quickly coming, and she felt confident and prepared. That was until the curtains opened, and she instantly froze. Everything that might have gone wrong on her first night did. The first thing that caught her off guard was Jackie’s absence. The second reason was that she was incredibly scared and could not stop shaking. Capote had lied to her, and it was obvious that she did not belong on stage. The critics had a field day, and Lee felt embarrassed. But perhaps that was Capote’s intention all along.
