Early on his career, some golf experts were concerned about Woods’ impact on the competitiveness and public appeal of professional golf. Bill Lyon, the sportswriter for Knight Ridder asked once in a column, “Isn’t Tiger Woods actually bad for golf?” Although Lyon did conclude that he wasn’t. In the beginning, a few pundits feared that Tiger Woods would actually drive out the spirit of competition by making existing courses obsolete, thus relegating opponents to compete for second place every week.
